Refractory materials: types, duties and correct selection
What refractory materials are and how bricks, castables, mortars, repair and insulation products are selected for actual service conditions.
Direct answer
A refractory is not selected by its temperature label alone. Bricks, castables, mortars, gunning and insulation materials must match the lining position, normal and peak temperature, atmosphere, wear, thermal cycling, geometry and installation method.
Main refractory product groups
Shaped products include bricks, plates and blocks. Unshaped products include castables, mortars, gunning, repair and plastic mixes. Insulating products control heat flow but do not automatically replace the refractory hot face.

Why temperature alone is not enough
Two positions at the same temperature may face different flame, abrasion, chemical or cycling conditions. Chemistry, porosity, cold crushing strength, dimensional change and thermal conductivity therefore need to be read together with the duty.

Provide the unit, fuel or process, normal and peak temperature, lining position, existing material, failure mode, dimensions and photos. Final values and installation rules must be confirmed in the current technical data sheet and position-specific instruction.

Short answers
Is the material with the highest temperature rating always best?
No. An unnecessarily high grade may add cost, while the wrong chemical or thermomechanical match may still shorten lining life.
Are refractory and heat-resistant materials the same?
The terms overlap in general language, but a technical specification must define the exact refractory class, properties, position and duty.
