Direct answer

Refractory mortar joins compatible bricks with a thin controlled joint. Anchoring mechanically retains a monolithic lining to its support; anchor material, layout, geometry, expansion allowance and cover are designed for the actual position and temperature.

Mortar must match brick and duty

Mortar chemistry and temperature class match the brick, atmosphere and joint thickness. Hydraulic, chemical and ceramic bonds can require different preparation, open time and first heat-up. A generic name is not a complete specification.

Masonry is not ramming

Shaped bricks are laid, set and jointed. Substrate and brick preparation, joint range and expansion breaks follow the instruction. Ramming refers to plastic or ramming mixes, not brick or cast concrete.

What anchoring means

Anchors transfer lining loads to the support while operating through a temperature gradient. Number, alloy, shape, orientation, welds, depth and spacing are designed with lining thickness and expansion.

Short answers

Can one mortar be used for every fireclay or high-alumina brick?

No. Chemistry, temperature range, bond and joint thickness must match the brick and service medium.

Are refractory anchors selected only by lining thickness?

No. Temperature, shell geometry, loading, movement, alloy, weld quality and installation sequence also matter.
